SMSC School Audit / Checklist

Teacher thinking about what questions to ask in a school SMSC audit to help prepare for an Ofsted inspection
We focus on helping schools capture evidence of SMSC using the Grid.

However, in recent weeks (probably due to  the new Ofsted inspection framework) it's clear that many senior leaders are asking questions about the way their school promotes spiritual, moral, social and cultural values.

To assist senior leaders in this self-evaluation process we've collated the following "SMSC checklist" which could form the basis of an initial audit.

The checklist can be divided into the following areas which relate to SMSC:

School Approach to SMSC (Including the SLT)

  • What is your vision/objective for SMSC provision?
  • Will the reaching of this objective enrich your school? How?
  • How are mebers of the SLT promoting this vision to teachers, parents - and the wider community?
  • Is your SMSC Policy effective, monitored or updated? (Do you have an SMSC Policy?)
  • Does your self-evaluation or improvement plan feature SMSC development?
  • Does your school website or prospectus refer to SMSC?
  • How do you keep parents, governors and other stakeholders informed of  your SMSC provision?

Managing SMSC Resources

  • What type of teaching/learning resources are available to support teaching staff in their delivery of SMSC values?
  • What strategy is in place to find new resources and distribute these to teaching staff?

  • Are any teachers or subjects leaders using SMSC resources tailored to their curriculum area?
  • Are there any 'extra' funds available to purchase commercial SMSC books, videos, websites?
  • If teaching staff create their ‘own’ SMSC resources - how can they be shared within the school?
