The SMSC Workshop

Title: Making sense of SMSC - leading, mapping and evaluating impact

A practical, inspirational and active course, full of ideas and advice on defining, identifying, tracking and evaluating SMSC. Including opportunities for individuals to trial the SMSC Grid and experience how it can be tailored to a school’s needs and streamline tracking and evaluate impact of SMSC.

The day will be led by John Pearce* and Daniel O’Brien* and will be built around key questions:
  1. WHY are we teaching SMSC? The motivation, ethics and values of the school community.
  2. WHAT do we mean by SMSC? How are we defining it? (Including reference to Ofsted Framework 2012)
  3. WHO is responsible for SMSC? How might they co-ordinate it?
  4. WHERE & WHEN is it provided? In what activities and experiences?
  5. HOW is it impacting on learning? How can we evaluate it?
*John is has a national reputation as an effective, cross phase, school improvement professional. He has expertise in leadership, curriculum, ethics and evaluation. He has been a teacher, head teacher, Senior Adviser and Inspector and now works across the UK in schools as a freelance consultant.

*Dan is the founder of OPEUS Education and designer of the SMSC Grid. He specialises in software and systems to support leaders of learning and has advised and provided professional support in over 300 schools in England.
